Frequent Business Fliers Say They are Being Pushed Into Coach reports ExpaAdvisor

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- An aviation consultant’s survey of frequent business travelers reveals a continuing squeeze on corporate travel budgets. While trips remain on the rise, travel budgets are not rising as fast. As a result, executives who flew on premium air tickets are increasingly finding themselves handed economy-class ones.

The Ascend aviation consultancy, which surveys business travelers in North America and Europe on travel plans and trends each year, in its 2012 survey found travelers foresee a 1.5% rise in business trips, compared with a 1% anticipated increase in corporate travel budgets. Since fares are seen as likely to keep rising into next year, further tightening of corporate travel budgets is seen to also be in the cards.

For longer air trips, the survey found 61% of executives are traveling on business or first-class tickets, with the rest relegated to economy or premium economy-class seats. Even within the economy classes, the trend is towards the cheaper seats. This year, 25% of the surveyed business travelers are flying in economy, compared with 20% in last year’s survey. Premium economy-class travelers dropped to 14% this year, down from 19% last year. That’s also in line with figures from the International Air Transport Association, which found a 3.5% drop in premium-class travel tickets in Europe, measured on a year-to-year basis, through this July.

According to Peter Morris, the chief economist for Ascend, the squeeze on business travelers offers both an opportunity and a challenge for lower-priced carriers. As corporate travel departments try to meet their needs at a time of escalating costs, lower-priced carriers may be getting a second look from firms which once spurned them. For instance, easyJet, the second-largest budget carrier in Europe, says business travelers now make up 18% of its passengers, and it expects their share to keep on rising. The company has recently signed an increasing number of corporate deals, including one in London with the Houses of Parliament.

At the same time, however, just having low prices may not be enough to bring a major shift in business to the lower-priced carriers. To pick up the business, the budget carriers will have to be able to compete on such key non-price factors as airports used, services provided and the variety and flexibility of their offerings. They will also have to deal with any earlier-negotiated deals their generally higher-priced rivals may have in place more offering competitive rates for business travelers.

In other survey results, 44% of the frequent business travelers identified airport check-in procedures as the most improved feature, pointing to such improvements as online check-ins. The areas where they saw the biggest changes for the worse were lines and delays caused by airport security procedures – also the biggest complaint in last year’s survey -- and in-flight service. Not surprisingly, service was thought to have deteriorated more in economy classes than in premium ones. And 79% of those surveyed predicted global consolidation in the airline industry will mean reduced choice and higher prices.

As States Crack Down On Texting Drivers, Insurance Firms Look at Rate Hikes reports KFZ--Versicherung

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- The financial website Bankrate.com reports, as states enact new laws against drivers who send or receive text messages while behind the wheel, auto insurance companies are weighing higher premiums for anti-texting law violators and looking for even tougher law and stepped-up enforcement.

The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says crashes caused by distracted drivers kill over 3,000 Americans annually. The agency also claims a motorist who sends or receives text messages behind the wheel is 23 times more likely to crash than is a driver who doesn’t text.

As a result, most states and the District of Columbia have enacted bans on driving while texting. Some states limit their bans to certain drivers, such as school bus drivers and persons who have just received their first driver’s licenses.

A vice president with the industry-funded Insurance Information Institute, based in New York City, says texters are likely to see premium increases, noting a “direct correlation between texting and having accidents.” At the same time, the executive notes, an individual’s insurance rate is determined by variety of factors, including the individual’s claims history and number of moving violations.

The industry executive also calls for beefing up current anti-texting laws, with stricter enforcement and more severe penalties, such as license suspension, rather than fines, as some states prescribe. Some states, however, already go further than that. A Utah statute enacted in 2009, for example, classifies drivers who text as “inherently reckless,” just as it does with drunk drivers, and a conviction for texting while driving and causing an accident resulting in a death or serious injury can bring a prison sentence of as much as 15 years.

Some anti-texting laws have drawn criticism for not coming into play unless the driver has first been cited for a separate offense, such as drunk or reckless driving, or speeding. Other states let off first offenders with a mere warning, and not all states even collect data on texting while driving, or lump it into the broader category of distracted driving. A national spokesperson for the Automobile Association of America also notes police departments often fail to keep track of the cause of accidents, or only do so for those involving serious injuries or property damage.

Some argue anti-texting laws may actually be counter-productive, though. A study done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, based in Arlington, Virginia, found accident rates had risen in three-quarters of states after they adopted anti-texting laws. A spokesman noted police say texting drivers now increasingly hold their phones low so they can’t be seen from outside the car, and as a result spend less time watching traffic.

The 200-strong crowd that gathered in Anchorage’s city park this week came together to demand that native peoples be returned the rights to live off the land and hunt traditional game to feed themselves and their families without governmental restrictions.

Lee Stephan, tribal president of the native village of Eklutna, spoke at the rally in mid-October: “I’m here to fire you up! We as Native people, we got to do something.” Stephan pointed to indigenous people’s excellent record of maintaining fish populations and avoiding overfishing. He noted that salmon and other species have only come under threat as a result of the “white man’s” poor environmental policies.

Criticism of state government fishing policies have come to a head in recent months. Salmon fishing was reduced on the Kuskokwim and Yukon rivers in 2012, but such restrictions were ignored by dozens of local fisherman. Those fishermen found themselves hit with fines, had their fishing gear confiscated, and in at least one case had their nets cut. This “fish in” was a deliberate protest against state restrictions and a forceful reminder that Native Alaskan rights advocates would not sit idle.

The fish in participants collectively received 33 written citations for violating state fishing laws and 21 nets and over 1,100 pounds of salmon were seized by government officials. The message was clear: natives are no different from other Alaskans and must abide by the same laws.

The gathering’s master of ceremonies, Princess Lucha, reminded the crowd what she believed was at stake: “When they cut our fishing net, that’s really our lifeline that they are cutting.” Lucha said that the protesters were not just fishing for themselves, but to provide food for their families and community. What hurts a single fisherman, she said, hurts the entire community.

One Third of Canadian Women Fantasize About Vacation Sex reports Electro Beach Tickets

According to the survey done by TripCentral.ca, 34% of women admitted to having sex outside their hotel room during their respective vacations.

The survey asked 1,013 Canadian women about their sexual habits. Women who took part were between ages 18-60, and were those who had been on vacation in the past three years. The women asked spanned married women, those in relationships, and those casually dating (not really dating at all).

While 43% admitted to sex outside the hotel, 54% admitted to fantasizing about risqué activities like public/semi-public sexual interaction.

Of the women surveyed, 35% say they fantasize about sex on the beach. Another 20% said they have already partaken in the act. Nearly 25% admitted to thoughts of sex in the ocean, and another 15% admitted to doing the deed. Twenty-one percent fantasized of sex on a boat, while 10% have done so.

Those women who have already participated in risqué activities were 71% more likely to fantasize about like activities instead of those women who did not already engage in it. Sex on the beach seemed to be the most common of the fantasies.

"I've always felt an undercurrent of romantic motivation being a key driver to the vacation travel purchase. We know that women initiate and lead vacation travel planning more than men," said tripcentral.ca President Richard Vanderlubbe.

It should be noted that there might be a correlation between women who are more interested in risqué activity, and the interest in talking about one’s sex life to begin with. There most certainly may be more or less women as a whole who are interested in such risqué activity. However, those who are willing to speak upon their sex life may be more or less likely to also admit in such kinky fetishes as public sexual activity.

New Parking Garage for Covington Courthouse to deal with Parking Problems reports Austin TX Garage Door

The garage’s design is to match the courthouse, which opened in 2003.

The courthouse is home to the 22nd Judicial District Court, which serves both the St. Tammany and Washington parishes. The clerk of court, registrar of voters, and district attorney are also housed in the $64 million, 280,000-square-foot building.

The registrar of voters are scheduled to move into the garage office space in mid-December, freeing up 3,100-square-feet at the courthouse. That space is to be occupied by the assessor’s office and clerk of court.

Parking has been quite a challenge in the downtown area for some time, following the opening of the courthouse. Those summoned to jury duty often found it very difficult to find parking, as they were often unaccustomed to the area.

The move is estimated to inject over $1.4 billion into the local economy, excluding gambling, over the next five years.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), sponsor of a major annual fall auto show signed a five-year extension, and the February and August fashion trade shows of the Men’s Apparel Guild in California (MAGIC) accepted a deal to stay in Las Vegas for three more years.

The semi-annual fashion show deal will have an estimated $611 million impact on the Vegas economy over the period, while the SEMA show deal is projected to add $827 million.

“SEMA and MAGIC committed to Las Vegas in the early years as we were evolving into a meetings and convention destination,” said Rossi Ralenkotter, president and CEO of the LVCVA.

The shows of both groups have long-standing relationships with Las Vegas. MAGIC has run its twice-annual shows there for the past 24 years, and the city has hosted the annual SEMA show for the past 35 years.

Both groups sent top-ranking representatives for a ceremony celebrating the longer contracts.

High Feed Prices Expected to Trim Pork Production reports IberSano

U.S. farmers say that production will be reduced because of rising feed costs, and Britain’s National Pig Association predicts that shortfalls next year will be “unavoidable.”

The Guardian reports dwindling numbers of swine throughout Europe. Farmers in Germany, the biggest pork producer in Europe, reduced their herds 1.3% in June compared with a year earlier; Ireland’s farmers cut back 6.6%, and in Denmark, herds have decreased 2.3%.

Bacon in the United States costs more now than it did in 2006, said Steve Meyer of Paragon Economics and a National Pork Producers Council adviser.

“It’s not that people don’t want to eat pork,” Meyer told the Guardian, “it’s just that they increasingly can’t afford to.”

Annual pork consumption per person is expected to fall to 44.16 pounds in 2013 from 50.8 pounds in 2007.

“We’ve been warning about this for years,” Meyer said. “Now that we are talking about bacon, we’ve really got everyone’s attention.”

Surging corn and soy prices, caused by the drought this year, have affected pork producers. The cost to produce 100 pounds of pork has been rising, Meyer said. It was $52.76 in 1999-2006 but he expects it to surpass $100 in 2013.

The high cost of feed has been worsened by a U.S. mandate that 10% of the country’s fuel must be made from ethanol, which is based on corn.

The U.S. ethanol subsidy and high prices have a global impact, according to Zoe Davies, the National Pig Association’s general manager. Farmers are slaughtering more pigs, intending to get out of pork production. She expects 35,000 sows will have been killed early by the end of the year.

“The market will sort this out,” Davies told the Guardian. “People will go out of business, there will be less pork products and prices will rise.”

Maryland Paving Company to pay nearly 7,000 dollars in Worker’s Death due to Heat Stress reports AuraMist

The worker was working with a crew on a church parking lot when he became ill due to heat stress. He was rushed to a hospital following the collapse, but was pronounced deceased later that day.

OSHA investigated the incident and cited that LH Musser & Sons Inc. for serious violations of OSHA’s general duty clause.

“This tragedy underscores the need for employers to ensure that workers have frequent access to water, rest and shade to prevent heat illness and injuries during the hot summer months, and also why it is important that workers are trained to recognize and respond to the signs of heat-related illness,” said Robert Szymanski, acting director of OSHA’s Baltimore/Washington Area Office.

The violation levied was due to the company’s failure in addressing heat-related hazards that occur during such work and in the particular high-heat surroundings. The employees were tasked with outdoor duties in high heat, and working with asphalt in direct sunlight. According the OSHA, the work/rest regimen required, as well as training on employee recognition of heat-related illness were not met. Appropriate access to water was also noted as a lacking quality.

The title of “serious violation” is invoked when there is a substantial probability of death or seriously harm resulting from an employer’s actions, or lack thereof.

The company was cited for one other-than-serious violation for failing to report the fatality within an eight-hour mandatory window. The title of “other-than-serious” is levied when it is a safety oversight, but did no result or in any way causes the death.

OSHA has developed heat illness educational materials in both English and Spanish for workers. Additional information is available on OSHA’s Web sites, and is available to help education and training on recognizing heat-related illness. There is even a free OSHA app that displays the risk level for workers on the heat index, and gives reminders for safety tips. The app is available in English and Spanish.

The paving and milling company has 15 days to comply with the citation.
