Sales Prove Ever-Increasing Popularity of Halloween in Australia reports SpaceWall

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 12, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia -- Reporting sales increases of as much as 30% across lines of costumes, confectionary, and pumpkins in the weeks leading up to Halloween, Coles and Woolworths is reporting that a growing number of Australians will celebrate the spooky festivities of a historically American holiday this year.

With Halloween celebrated on the night of October 31st, other retailers are getting in on the excitement as well, with the nation's sole supplier of Jack O'Lantern pumpkins expecting to sell nearly 100,000 pumpkins this year. Reports also indicate that specially created chocolates, costumes, and pumpkin-flavoured beer will also be in high demand.

While Australians will not compete with the $8 billion spent by Americans during this Halloween season, festivities are becoming a key fixture on the promotional diaries of local supermarkets.

Independent retailers including Coles and Woolworths will invest millions of dollars this year on in-store promotions, catalogs, and decorations in hopes to gain interest from shoppers.

Generation-Y Australians are reportedly embracing Halloween's horrifying mood at a higher rate than both Generation-X and the baby boomers.

McCrindle Research statistics show that Halloween is heavily marketed towards the youth as 53% of Generation-Y’s celebrated the ghoulish holiday, compared to 45% of Generation-X’s and a mere 40% of baby boomers.

Retailers are investing heavily in promotions and point-of-sale marketing. The strategy is to entice children and their parents to spend money. It comes as no surprise given the fact that 51% of Australians with primary school-aged children are planning involvement in Halloween related festivities.

''More Australians feel it is being celebrated, they see it around more, and more have some involvement in it,'' said McCrindle Research founder and social researcher Mark McCrindle.

''It's largely retail led, with themes and products in stores, such as special chocolates branded with Halloween and pumpkin displays,'' said McCrindle.

Coles stores have carried carving pumpkins for over week and have been selling strongly with sales up 30% from last year. Moraitis, fresh produce wholesaler, is expecting to sell 100,000 Halloween pumpkins this season and has subsequently increased Jack O'Lantern pumpkin planting 10% every year in order to meet the high demand.

Chris Garlick, Coles general manager of merchandise, said that the supermarket has tried to generate an ''event'' type atmosphere around Halloween. Coles saw an increase of three times the standard day confectionary sales on Halloween day just a year ago.

''All of us look for events in which we can engage our customers and this is another fun event … which is different to other weeks of the year,'' said Garlick.

''Costumes and decorations are at the low price point. I think customers think they will buy it for this year and again next year as well, but don't spend too much money on [items].''

Chief executive of the Australian National Retailers Association, Margy Osmond, said that stores such as Big W were seeing growth year on year for accessories such as masks and costumes, with confectionary companies creating special products such as Cadbury Screme eggs, just for Halloween.

Pet shops also made a fortune over the Halloween season by selling costumes for dogs.
But Australians were still aware that Halloween was an American tradition that merely encouraged children to eat junk food, according to McCrindle: ''There is a sense it has a dark theme to it too,'' he said. ''In a sense it's surprising it's done so well.''

New Research Shows Smoking More Deadly Than Suspected reports E-Cigarette

$
0
0
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Research published by the British online journal known as the The Lancet shows that women who smoke take ten years off of their lives.

The study surveyed 1.3 million women and determined that those who stopped smoking before their 40th birthday would evade 90% of the increased risk and that those who quit before their 30th birthday would evade 97% of the increased risk. The research comes a century after the birth of Sir Richard Doll, who was one of the first people to connect smoking with the deadly form of lung cancer.

The study took place between 1996 and 2001 and surveyed women from the ages of 50 years of age to 65 years of age. The women were asked to fill out a survey containing lifestyle, medical, and social questions about their lives. Three years later, the same women were asked to complete the survey again. The National Health Service would then notify the study’s researchers when the women died and gave them their cause of death. Since the study began, 66,000 women have died with an average trace life of 12 years from the time they filled out the survey.

When the study began, one-fifth of the women were smokers, while 28% were ex-smokers, and 52% had never smoked. The study showed that those women who had continued to smoke over the three year period before the survey was readministered, were three times more likely to perish over the following nine years than those who did not smoke.

This result shows that two-thirds of the total number of deaths in smokers in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s was thanks to smoking. The reason behind this finding is that a lot of the deaths of smokers compared to non-smokers was due to diseases that are related to smoking such as lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

Researchers also found that the amount of smoking a woman engaged in made a huge difference. The study found that even women who smoked “lightly,” (1-9 cigarettes per day) had double the death rate compared to those women who were non-smokers.

The overall conclusion of the study was that smoking is much worse than previously suspected. The numbers prove that the likelihood of death increases severely for those women who smoke cigarettes consistently on a daily basis. The study also showed that while smoking can be fatal, quitting before the age of 30 and even before 40 can be exponentially helpful to survival.

University of Oxford co-author Professor Richard Peto, who worked with Richard Doll for many years, reports that, “If women smoke like men, they die like men – but, whether they are men or women, smokers who stop before reaching middle age will on average gain about an extra 10 years of life.” Peto added: “Both in the UK and the US, women born around 1940 were the first generation in which many smoked substantial numbers of cigarettes throughout adult life. Hence, only in the 21st century could we observe directly the full effects of prolonged smoking, and of prolonged cessation, on premature mortality among women.”

Professor Rachel Huxley of the University of Minnesota said: “That we had to wait until the 21st century to observe the full consequences in women of a habit that was already widespread in the mid-20th century, when tobacco smoking pervaded much of the developed world, might seem paradoxical. But this is because in most of Europe and the US, the popularity of smoking among young women reached its peak in the 1960s, decades later than for men. Hence, previous studies have underestimated the full eventual impact of smoking on mortality in women, simply because of the lengthy time lag between smoking uptake by young women and disease onset in middle and old age.”

VFC's Stock House Stock Watch Tuesday, 13 November

$
0
0
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 13, 2012 ) New York, NY -- Investor caution could dominate mid-week trading as debates over the pending 'fiscal cliff' in the United States intensify as European leaders across the Atlantic decide to pay for another round of bailout financing to ward off a Greek bankruptcy.

VFC's Stock House, an information and research outlet that brings ideas and opens discussions to a broad spectrum of investors, identifies multiple stocks and stories to keep an eye on amid the mid-week distractions.

Full report available: http://vfcsstockhouse.com/blog/article/-stock-watch-tuesday-13-november-msft-dks-kors-sks-mric-bsx-si-hd-abt-gild-imsc

The Greek government ignored the molotov cocktails and angry protesters last week to come up with additional measures of austerity - the first step towards securing this additional round of bailout money - and European fiscal representatives granted the country another two years to get its fiscal act together, but concerns of how these bailouts will be paid for transparent to European taxpayers will still weigh heavily on the markets.

European shares suffered as a result on Tuesday, as did the Euro, which hit multi-month lows.

Any talk of European or international fiscal entities leaving the Greeks to fend for themselves is slim at this point, so the markets may take any concerns of a return to the drachma with a grain of salt, given that the bailout money has already started to flow into the country and it doesn't look like the tap is going to be shut off. That said, if the rest of Europe gets tired of bearing the brunt of Greece's woes and uncertainty again creeps into the markets, all bets may be off.

For now, however, most investor attention in the US will likely be paid to the looming fiscal cliff and the stark divide between Washington's politicians on how to get a deal done...and then there's also a fair share of scandal and drama hitting the wires by the minutes, for those that enjoy such sideshows.

In the meantime, here's a few updates for some stocks and stories that we've been keeping an eye on...

Earnings:

Home Depot (HD): This week is slated to be a retailer-heavy week for earnings report and Home Depot marked an early win with a report that beat the street. The win, according to numerous media outlets, could largely be attributed to a rebound in the housing market and - although not your typical "retailer" - could also speak towards the uptick in consumer confidence noted earlier this month before the elections. Sales and net earnings both increased from the same quarter of the previous year and beat both internal and external estimates. Shares were up by two percent during early trading on Tuesday and could set the tone for an optimistic week in the earnings department.

Retailers: Saks (SKS), on the other hand, reported earnings generally in-line with estimates, but guided lower for the remainder of the year citing Hurricane Sandy as a cause for concern. Revenue came in slightly below estimates, but not enough to disappoint to the levels of other major misses of the quarter. Michael Kors Holdings (KORS) and Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) did modestly beat the street, however, reaffirming the potential positive trends in the retail sector leading into the holiday shopping season.

Newsmakers:

Gilead Sciences (GILD): Shares of Gilead were on the fly Monday and early Tuesday on strong volume after the company reported positive resutls for its hep C treatment, composed of a combination of drugs. According to the study results, the combination "rendered hepatitis C undetectable after four weeks after completing 12 weeks of therapy." The GILD price movement spiked shares to record levels and highlighted investor enthusiasm towards new treatments for Hep C being developed. Abbott Laboratories (ABT) is developing a similar treatment, but this round goes to Gilead. With a price spike like that in a bum market, GILD is a story to watch.

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT): Shares of Microsoft were trading lower during early trading on Tuesday after the surprise announcement that Steven Sinofsky, the potential heir to the CEO position, left the company on Monday evening. Little is known for the reason at this time, but nervous investors took to selling early on Tuesday. Microsoft has been making news as its new tablet has been gaining quick market share while Windows 8 hits the market, too. The Sinofsky departure will likely turn out to just be a hiccup, but it's a story to watch since investors don't like uncertainty.

Healthcare, Biotech, Pharmaceutical:

MRI Interventions (MRIC): As previously discussed, MRI Interventions has developed the ClearPoint and ClearTrace MRI-enhancing systems that provide medical professionals with real-time imagery during complicated procedures on the brain and heart, respectively. Through partnerships with Siemens AG (SI), Boston Scientific Corporation (BSX) and Brainlab, the company has managed to push this technology into numerous markets in the US and recently made a move into Europe, too.

A key development that investors have been concentrating on recently is the revenue that the company can generate from "disposable items" relating to the procedures involving the ClearPoint or ClearTrace units, in addition to the revenue generated by sales of the units themselves. As discussed during previous weeks, MRIC has been able to note impressive revenue gains in relation to those 'disposable items,' providing a notable avenue for growth moving forward.

In addition to that note, however, company officials have also emphasizedthe importance of transitioning into a new stage of growth, as noted in a recent interview. The new push for more robust growth will revolve around the boosting a minimally-manned sales force with additional personnel in order to expand the awareness and market penetration of the ClearPoint and ClearTrace technologies. In keeping with that strategy, the company announced this week the appointment of Robert C. Korn as the head of its new global sales and marketing efforts. Mr. Korn had previously served as Regional Sales Director for Medtronic Surgical Technologies and brings to MRI the experience and contacts necessary to validate the next stage of growth.

MRIC shares responded to the news with a nearly twenty percent price spike on Monday and erased the losses of last week's close. Investors will look to the next few quarters for evidence that the boosted sales force is bringing returns that could soften the blow of any future financing deals. Currently, MRIC is set with enough cash to last well into 2013, according to the terms of the latest stock offering.

Mr. Korn joins two other recent additions to the sales team, indicating that MRIC is backing up words with action - always something investors look for from a management team.

Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) / Global Defense:

Implant Sciences (IMSC): Implant received quite a bit of attention last week following its questionable move lower and quick rebound to close the week, but all investor attention is still being concentrated towards the ongoing TSA certification process that could open the doors for numerous government contracts in relation to airline and air cargo security. It should also be noted, however, that while awaiting the final TSA news, the company has demonstrated that there are multiple avenues from which the company could secure global revenue. Earlier this year the Quantum Sniffer technology was put to use in Cartagena, Colombia to provide security at the 'Summit of the Americas,' and then just months ago the technology was emphasized in other high-threat market, such as Nigeria.

This week additional evidence of the global need for Sniffer technology was on display.

On Monday Implant secured another defense contract in the Middle East, with the sale being made by a Bahrain-based contractor. This particular contractor has registered sales from multiple countries in the region, which should be noteworthy because although Syria and Libya are garnering all the attention from the media right now, consistent threats of here-and-there explosive attacks are becoming increasingly prevalent around the region. In fact, recent news reports have indicated that Bahrain has called up its national guard to assist the police in dealing with these threats, making Monday's announcement by a Bahrain-based company that much more notable.

Following that news, it was announced on Tuesday morning that another order was placed from an un-named Asian nation to bolster its secret service force. While TSA still remains the holy grail in the eyes of the investing community, the Quantum Sniffer technology continues to demonstrate its versatility around the globe. Still a hot story to watch right now, considering that the TSA approval should be considered as much a milestone to this company as a drug approval by the FDA for a still-developing small pharma or biotech.

Roundup: The Greece situation looks to be somewhat settled for the time being, so it's back to worrying about the economic impact that a fiscal cliff would have on the US economy. As discussed this weekend, it's more likely than not that a deal will be reached, in my opinion, if only because each side will want to claim some sort of victory, but things could get ugly in the meantime. As usual, look for volatility to dominate trading for the remainder of the year.

Shares were trading relatively flat Tuesday morning.

Happy Trading!!!

Alps Murder: British-Iraqi Changed House Locks Before Dying reports Locksmith San Antonio

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) San Antonio, TX -- Worried that he might lose ownership of his mock Tudor home in Claygate, Surrey due to a court case, Saad al-Hilli, 50, changed the locks on his home before traveling to Annecy.

Mr. al-Hilli lived in the home with his wife Ikbal, and their two children Zeena and Zainab.

He told friends that he feared having to sell the home because of the case. Saad’s father died a year earlier and supposedly solicitors had been trying to resolve a tricky dispute between Mr. al-Hilli and his brother Zaid over property inheritance.

According to a family friend, Saad claimed his brother had sacked his solicitor and there was no longer any communication between the brothers. "Since I have known Saad, the only problem in his life is this recent disagreement with this brother," the family friend told a BBC radio documentary.

The brother has been interviewed by police as a witness and stills denies that there was a dispute.

Saad al-Hilli and his wife were gunned down near Lake Annecy on the fifth of September. Mrs. al-Hilli's mother and a French cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, were also killed in the shooting.

The alleged inheritance dispute brings new light to the investigation and bank accounts linked to the family have been frozen.

The Swiss newspaper Tribune de Geneve reported that Mr. al-Hilli had travelled to Geneva shortly before he was murdered, to a location less than an hour from where the family was camping. al-Hilli’s trip to Geneva suggest there was a financial motive for the attack, though French police are still putting together the pieces regarding the family's movements since arriving in France. Up to 650 people had already been questioned in the case.

The police are in the process of issuing an appeal for information based on telephone calls, but have experienced delays.

More Colleges Dropping Gender Restrictions On Dorm Assignments reports Bunk Bed Blitz

$
0
0
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- The Kansas City Star reports on a Missouri state college it says embodies a growing trend: no restrictions on gender assignments in its dormitories. Northwest Missouri State University in Marysville, Missouri last year adopted “gender-neutral” student housing policies.

The school’s new policy was originally prompted by a request from transgendered students. Wanting to accommodate their housing preferences without requiring students to register their sexual identity to switch from one gendered dorm to another, the school decided simply to open all rooms in both its residence halls to any student, regardless of gender.

By the time the small state college had adopted the change, the transgendered students who had requested more on-campus housing options had already graduated or moved off-campus. Some of the beneficiaries of the change turned out to be unmarried opposite-sex couples, who could now sign up to share a residence hall room openly.

Some officials at the school initially had some concerns over how the new unisex campus housing policy would be viewed in its small town setting in conservative rural northwest Missouri, especially after the school issued a press release announcing the change. The director of student housing, however, says she “didn’t hear a thing.”

In the large four-student suites making up some of Northwest Missouri’s dormitory spaces, the school says it gets varying gender mixes. The head of student housing says roommates at the school are more likely to be just friends, rather than romantic items. Students in the same classes or majoring in the same subject often opt to share rooms or suites, as do some siblings. One potential drawback for couples considering a shared dorm is the school requires a room commitment is for a full school year, which may be look less attractive if the romance cools.

An estimated 50 colleges around the country now have similar policies. Private liberal arts schools, starting with Ohio’s Oberlin, were the first to make the move, but large state universities like the University of Michigan and Oregon State have now adopted similar positions.

Kathleen Kerr, incoming president of the American College Personnel Association, who also supervises dormitories at the University of Delaware, flatly says the change “is the trend and it will continue to grow.” She notes a school’s prime motivation is to give students “a safe and comfortable living environment so they can concentrate on their studies,” adding that gender-segregated on-campus housing sometimes “is not the way to do that.”

While schools are handling on-campus gender housing rules “the way that makes the best sense for them,” Kerr says, she adds she knows of no college allowing gender-neutral housing for students below 18 years of age.

Safe Haven Vaults offers futuristic way to protect valuables reports Safes Gallery

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- Residents of Utah who are uncomfortable storing their valuable documents or possessions in a home safe or a safety deposit box at the bank can now take their protection to a new level thanks to Safe Haven Private Vaults.

New technology such as fingerprint entry pads, iris scanning technology, and motion and pressure sensors are things customers can expect when they choose Safe Haven Private Vaults. Usually these are the type of security measures used to keep precious and priceless art safe in a spy thriller movie, but Safe Haven Vaults take security to the maximum.

To get into the building, customers need a number code to enter the first door. Customers must then have their retina’s scanned to pass through the second door. Once through the second door, customers will find themselves in a hallway known as the “Man Trap,” in which the owner of a safety deposit box must lock and plug in another code to open the next door.

Safe Haven Vaults at 8675 S. 700 East in Sandy is open 24 hours per day, every day of the week, which deters it from being stolen like a fireproof strong box or accessed when closed like a bank’s safety deposit box.

Safe Haven owner Nathan Coccimiglio said that the demand for their services is skyrocketing by the day:

"Some of these technologies are being used in the Pentagon and security of federal buildings and such," he said.

The service is completely anonymous as the only information stored is retina related. There are no names, addresses, or any other personal information stored and the owner of the box has access to its codes.

Safe Haven Vaults contain 3,000 boxes of varying sizes, including some large safes with digital locks.

The physical building of Safe Haven has reinforced steel walls as well as bulletproof glass for maximum security. Each room also contains cameras recording every inch of the action.

"There are over 50 cameras that are monitored on-site and off-site, interior and exterior as well, with the ability to zoom in," said Coccimiglio.

There are employees on watch 24 hours per day as well to watch the security cameras for any unusual activity and the building contains a state-of-the-art alarm system to catch any breaches.

As the ninth such facility in the country, Safe Haven Private Vaults will open for business on November 3. Their prices will be reasonable for the amount of security you will receive at $400 per year for the smallest boxes up to $3000 for the biggest boxes.

With many people already reserving boxes, owner Coccimiglio raves that his company is hands down the safest alternative for keeping your valuables secure.

"There's nothing comparable in the state," he said. "This is a maximum security facility for valuables, much like Fort Knox is to America's gold reserve."

Arrests Made in Burglary Ring in North Florida reports Safes Gallery

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- Ten people have been arrested in connection with a series of home burglaries in North Florida.

Three suspects still are being sought, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office stated. More than $60,000 in stolen goods has been recovered.

Sheriff’s officials said one member of the group would case the neighborhood and learn when residents were home.

“When they were leaving, when they were going to work, how long they were usually gone, when they were coming back, and they would watch a house for a while until they were comfortable they knew those patterns,” said Hancel Woods, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, according to News4.

Jewelry, electronics, and documents were among the items taken.

At least five burglaries were carried out during the day, deputies said. The Bostwick neighborhood was a target of multiple break-ins.

Kenny Stevens, whose home was burglarized, said firearms, a computer and a safe were taken.

“I noticed my front door was open, and I make sure my doors are closed when I leave, and it was open and I knew something was wrong then,” he said. “So I eased in the house, and it was trashed.”

Sheriff’s deputies said an arrest during a robbery in August helped lead them to the suspects in the group. Robert Dale is being held in Clay County with charges pending in connection with two investigations.

The 13 charged in the Putnam investigation were: Brian Brantley, Michael Carter, Victor Concepcion, Donna Headley, Sean Headley Jr., Richardo Herrera, Angel Jones, Loman Largen, Christopher Maze, Von Mitchell, William Mitchell, Cornell Pena, and Andrew Sullivan.

The Sheriff’s Office credited a special task force with the arrests.

“The perseverance of these dedicated detectives is what it took to catch these criminals,” said Putnam Sheriff Jeff Hardy, according to News4.

Bostwick residents expressed gratitude and relief at the arrests.

“I don’t have to worry about someone coming into my home with my small children during the night,” said Stella Mathis, who lives in the area.

South African Diamond Dealer Faces Fraud Charges reports Safes Gallery

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- A South African diamond dealer charged in a nearly $5 million Ponzi scheme is in jail awaiting trial.

Giel Mans also is accused of trying to bribe a prosecutor and faking his own kidnapping, according to Forbes.com. Mans reportedly asked to be released so he could retrieve $10 million worth of diamonds to pay back the victims of his investment scheme.

A judge in Port Elizabeth denied bail. Magistrate Abigail Beaton made the decision after prosecutors said Mans would be a flight risk.

In 2005, Mans started to seek investors for his diamond business. He said he would resell diamonds abroad for a large markup and promised a handsome return. Mans was said to have supplied financial documents charting the steady growth of his investments.

Authorities said, however, that the documents had been falsified. Receipts for expensive diamonds also were said to be bogus.

Investors had entrusted Mans with almost $5 million.

After doubts about his business intensified, Mans fell victim to an apparent kidnapping while he was on a trip to buy diamonds. A text message to his wife demanded over $500,000 in ransom.

Investigators used Facebook to check out Mans’ connections, and they found him on Christmas Eve with friends.

Mans faces charges including fraud, obstruction of justice and theft of more than $1 million. He also is accused of offering a prosecutor $12,000 for his release.

At a bail hearing in October, Mans claimed he had $10 million in diamonds stashed in a London safety-deposit box. He offered to retrieve the jewels if he were freed on bail.

Mans’ claims were discounted by prosecutors, who pointed out that the suspect was accused of staging a fake kidnapping and offering a bribe.

“I can safely say there is no security box,” said Prosecutor Advocate Wilhelm de Villiers. “He must have (imagined it).”

Beaton ordered Mans held in custody until he goes to trial.

Half Moon Pub to Begin Six FIgure Expansion Project reports BarStool Megastore

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- On its fifth anniversary, the Half Moon pub and brewery business on the well-known site of the West Lindsey pub is set to embark on an £100,000 expansion project.

Business owner and licensee Phil Troop is going against what the economy says and has already begun construction on his locally famous pub. The six-figure expansion will include the building of a much larger brewery that is expected to quadruple the size and capacity of Grafters Ales at Wingham by Stow, near Gainsborough.

Troop hopes to have the project done by the end of the calendar year and says that the new addition will totally change the operation at the Half Moon pub in the village.

In addition to a bigger brewing area, the project will create a beer garden, an office, and viewing windows for those interested in how ale is made.

While this is a new and exciting adventure for Mr. Troop, the 48-year-old admits that it has not been an easy road for the company. Troop and his wife Tracy have owned the Half Moon for over fifteen years said that in 2002, the company came face to face with bankruptcy. They were able to recover nicely, but in 2007 had further money troubles.

"There are many reasons why pubs have struggled in recent years and we've been affected by most of them because we're also off the beaten track," he said.

"Most pubs now do food but we knew we had to do something really different to attract customers and keep them.

"As a real ale enthusiast I decided that real ale would be our unique element.

"So I learned how to be a brewer, all my customers liked it and I've expanded to take on take on both a full-time brewer and a delivery driver.

"So next summer we're expecting the brewery tour to be an attraction in its own right.

"I've already had people come from Manchester to Lincoln by train, ride over to Willingham by bicycle and then back to Gainsborough and return home by train.

"So now we supply other pubs, do beer swaps with other breweries and still enter the occasional beer competition – we won the silver and two bronze awards in the Campaign for Real Ale's (Camra) Best Beer in Britain East Midlands final this year."

32-year-old brewer Aaron Taylor said: "The extended facilities mean that, instead of the present weekly limit of 36 nine-gallon firkins a week, we'll be able to quadruple our capacity."

Camra spokesman Jon Howard said: "It's fantastic to see pioneering breweries such as Grafters undergoing high levels of demand for their beers.

"This really reflects how far the industry has come in recent years – as no-one could have predicted ten years ago that by the end of 2012 there would be more than 1,000 breweries now operational across the UK.

"It really is a golden age to be a real ale drinker, and it is hoped successful companies such as Grafters continue to flourish in these tough economic times."

Government to Aid Pubs and Bars Due to Their Social Benefits reports BarStool Megastore

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- The MP for Bristol North West, Charlotte Leslie said that pubs resembled the real-world version of the House of commons. Leslie stated that these meeting areas were “where there are proper debates about real things”.

The minister of the Treasury backed this somewhat surprising claim, and stated that pubs benefit from plans to charge minimum price for alcohol to offset supermarkets push for cheap deals.

Leslie has held office in parliament since the 2010 elections, and she spoke during a commons debate regarding beer duty. The MP warned the duty was damaging the pub industry.

“All of us probably enjoy a pint, but why is this debate so important?” she asked. “It is about a bit more than a pint in the pub, although of course that is very important to a lot of us.

“I am sure that I am not the only member present who, wanting to find out what is happening in the constituency, goes first of all to the pub and enjoys a nice pint at the same time,” she said.

“If we are to talk about the big society, we should recognize that the pub is at the heart of it. It is a little-known fact that pubs donate more than £120 million a year to charitable causes.

The Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid, stated that the government wanted to assist communities in the takeover of running facilities, “including pubs”.

“Minimum unit pricing” of alcohol is supposed to stop drinks being sold at supermarkets off licenses. Such alcohols are heavily discounted at most stores, which puts pubs at a disadvantage that can be difficult to overcome. “Raising the price of cheap alcohol will help tackle excessive alcohol consumption, and I hope that pubs will benefit,” he said.

“The Government recognize the importance of pubs and brewers to their local communities and the wider economy. We have done much to try and support that industry,” he said.

Bar in Belfast Serves Rum Drinks for Nearly $700 Apiece reports BarStool Megastore

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) Matthews, NC -- Have you ever felt the need for a quality glass of high-integrity rum? Well, now you can have one at the Merchant Hotel in Belfast, wherein you can taste a vintage glass of rum for over $600 per glass.

Those who attend the bar at Bill Wosley’s luxury Cathedral Quarter hotel also has a bottle of Appleton Estate 50-year-old Jamaican Independence Reserve rum. That rum is the world’s oldest barrel-aged rum.

The rum was barreled in 1962 during the celebration of Jamaica’s independence from the UK. The drink costs thousands to buy, and is used to create 20 “Old Fashioned” cocktails.
The special rum in any of the cocktails will set a patron back at least $600. Such a drink would include the Appleton 50, cane syrup, aromatic bitters, orange zest served over ice, and gold leaves frozen within in.

If one were to be both adventurous and a fool, he or she could buy a round for 20 good friends for a total of nearly $15,000.

The manager of The Bar, which is located in The Merchant, stated that it is the only bar in Ireland and one of a select few in all of the UK to have the rare bottle. “We ordered it six months ago and got it in last week direct from Jamaica,” Chris said.

“No other bar in Ireland will have it and I think just the Savoy and the Dorchester in London will have it.

“Only 800 bottles of the rum have been made available for sale around the world,” He said. “The rest will be in private collections around the world.

The rum creation is still not the most expensive in the world. In 2007, Merchant’s $1,100 Trader Vic’s Mai Tai held the title. That was, until the Salvatore’s Legacy, sold at the Salvatore’s Bar in London, was sold for $11,000 on October 11.

Herbs and Spices: Antioxidants and Immune System Supporters reports Pollen Pressers

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 15, 2012 ) Santa Clara County, CA -- Herbs and spices not only add flavour to your diet, but they can provide important health benefits. Whether your ailing health problems include circulatory problems, allergies, or muscle cramps and pains, there are many different types of herbs that can help you keep you in good health.

Here, then, are the top nine herbs that you should consider adding to your meals on a regular basis:

(1) Thyme: Thyme, a common household herb used for a range of dishes, can also be used as a medicinal herb. It can be used in a range of circumstances, from killing germs to curing common colds. Two teaspoons of this herb pack in nearly 20 percent of our daily requirement for iron. Thyme is also rich in manganese, a mineral that boosts brain function and also contains many active principals found to have disease-preventing properties beneficial to body development.

(2) Parsley: Parsley contains calcium, B-complex vitamins and iron. It is also a source of magnesium and potassium. Parsley has been traditionally used for congestion and inflammation of the kidney and bladder, and it can aid with kidney stones and urine retention. Parsley’s root and leaves are a good source of help to the liver and spleen. It has also been proven to help individuals diagnosed with edema and diabetes get better. Parsley roots and seeds also contain ingredients that help produce muscle pain relief. Parsley juice may also be excellent for the blood vessels, capillaries and arterioles. Two tablespoons of fresh parsley may provide 150 percent of daily requirements for Vitamin K, which plays an important role in blood clotting, proper bone formation and liver function.

(3) Lemongrass: Lemongrass is best known as an ingredient used in SouthEast Asian cuisine. It is a great addition to meals and has medical properties that help reduce fever, ease muscle cramps, upset stomachs and migraine headaches. It is also packed with antioxidants, which aid in protecting against stress, a significant contributor to heart disease.

(4) Oregano: Oregano should be an abundant herb in your cooking. This herb contains 20 times more cancer-fighting antioxidants than other herbs and holds the same power as an entire apple.

(5) Rosemary. Rosemary helps fight off carcinogenic compounds created when meats are barbecued or grilled (Prevention, 2012). Rosemary also aids in increasing circulation and maintaining memory.

(6) Sage: Sage is a strongly flavored herb that also is a good, herbal addition to meals. This herb contains high levels of antioxidants, which not only aids in strengthening your immune system, but also increases your brain stamina. Sage has been around for more than 1,000 years and has been used to treat various health ailments. It contains rosemary acid, which acts as an effective anti-inflammatory agent in the body, proving beneficial to those individuals with joint and muscle pain. Sage can also help ease colds, coughs and excess mucous accumulation in the body. With sleep-inducing qualities, sage has been known to have calming properties that can be beneficial to those individuals suffering from insomnia (Livestrong, 2012).

(7) Cilantro: Cilantro is a common herb found in dishes throughout the world, from Spain to the Middle East. As a powerful natural cleansing agent, it has been used to remove heavy metals and other toxic agents in the body. Chemical compounds found in cilantro helps the tissues, blood and organs, and it encourages the body to eliminate harmful substances that are transported via the cardiovascular system.

(8) Lavender: has commonly been used in a range of home remedies. It’s calming effects have made it an important component in perfumes, body washes and scented candles. Lavender tea also helps to soothe headaches, nerves and stress. Additionally, it is a good source of calcium and vitamin A.

(9) Peppermint: has high antioxidant content. It helps to reduce food cravings and is recognized as a stomach healer, which aids with IBS, constipation, stomach aches and nausea. An additional benefit it has on the body is that it supports the immune system to fight common colds and flus.

As an important tip, do not forget that moderation here is key. You do not want to overuse any of these herbs. Although each of these herbs are highly beneficial to the body and your health, you want to make sure that you use these herbs in moderate amounts, as most they can be toxic when eaten in high amounts.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 15, 2012 ) Chicago, IL -- A newly published Review on the Amazon Kindle Fire HD named Amazon Kindle Fire HD Review TOP 10 NEGATIVE and POSITIVE Tech Specs argues that Amazon's latest tablet is not perfect. Even though there are plenty of positives about the tablet, there are also a few shortcomings. The major positives are its high definition display, front camera and microphone, larger internal storage that can be up to 32GB and faster Wi Fi download speeds thanks to dual band and dual antenna features.

The major negatives according to the post on http://tabletxray.com/top-10-negatives-of-the-kindle-fire-hd/ are the lack of 3G/4G on the 7 inch model, the lack of a rear camera, the lack of expandable memory, lack of a GPS etc. However, they also provide several tips and tricks that one can use to overcome those limitations. For example, the Kindle Fire HD may not have a slot for memory card insertion, however, if one thinks outside the box, it is possible to expand the memory using an external hard drive and a free android app to transfer data wirelessly. Similarly, using another cheap device, it is possible to get 3G/4G on the Kindle Fire HD.

Another section of the Kindle Fire Review is dedicated to showing shortcuts, tips and tricks a Kindle Fire owner can use to maximize its use. Modular Homes: Consumers can take advantage of off-season construction costs

$
0
0
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 15, 2012 ) Boston, MA -- A cold Massachusetts winter is no reason to delay having your dream home built. Yes, even in the extreme temperatures a modular home can be constructed quickly and efficiently for you. There is no reason to wait until spring to build, and risk paying higher prices or interest rates. A modular home offers more benefits than just being able to purchase more home for your money, it offers the ability to build your home at any given time.

ModularHomesNetwork.com is focused on educating consumers on the advantages offered by Modular Housing. The revolution of the modular construction method means that consumers can have a better built, lower cost home option build in the climate controlled settings of a factory that is then delivered to a building site on the schedule that they need. No longer are they tied to the traditional seasonal cycle that leaves them hostage to the seasonal demand of regular contractor’s schedule. A modular home can be built year round and takes advantage of the off season costs that are likely lower.

Look at some of the facts:

• Modular homes are constructed in an environmentally protected factory. There are no reasons for weather delays or for production to stop because of snow. The weather proof manufacturing process also ensures that your homes skeleton will remain free from any weather induced damage.

• Once your new home arrives to the site where it is to be constructed the final assembly can be performed at record speeds. Most of the work has already been completed; the home just needs to be secured. Being able to work at this fast of a pace, as opposed to building the home from the ground up, ensures that the home will become weather tight in a very quick time frame.

• Winter time is the off season and this could result in additional savings to you. It is already a common fact that you will be able to purchase a larger home with more amenities when you buy a modular home. On average a modular home can cost almost 30% less than a stick built home, a considerable savings. With the winter slow down, and builders hurting for business, you will be able to negotiate larger deals or take advantage of specials they may be offering.

Modular homes are not mobile homes. They do not have wheels, they cannot be moved once secured to the site and they do not fall apart when the first wind comes through. What modular homes do offer is a great way to build your own home in an economically fashion and in the manner you desire. It provides you a way to build, even during inclement weather when all other construction has stopped, and it allows you to be the deciding factor as to when you want to move. With interest rates so incredibly low, and the slow season approaching for builders, no one should pass this opportunity of a lifetime.

Consumers in Texas, California, Louisiana and Florida may have the luxury of not suffering through the winter season. But for the rest of us, whether it be Michigan, Connecticut, Minnesota, or any of cold New England, a modular constructed home may be the best solution. And after your new home is constructed, you can call your friends with your iPhone and sing the joys of your new home like a contestant on ‘The Voice’.

About Modular Homes:

ModularHomesNetwork.com (http://www.modularhomesnetwork.com) is a leading expert on the Modular Homes Industry, offering consumer resources on plans, pricing and builder resources. We offer services throughout the U.S. with a goal to help our customers find the greatest value for their budget.

Experiments show New Hope for Fighting Heart Disease, in Pill Form reports Hand Held Press

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 14, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- A new pill has scientists excited, as the new fat-buster seems to also prevent the clogging of patients’ arteries.

The new ‘wonderpill’ utilizes a micro-organism, a friendly bacteria that many already take in the form of yogurt drink and dietary supplements.

It appears that just two capsules that possess enough healthy bacteria to slash cholesterol in the body (when taken per day).

In an study presented to the American Heart Association, a McGill University of Montreal team stated that the treatment used probiotics, which are living microorganisms present in the stomach and gut.

Dr. Mitchell Jones, who was lead author of the study, stated that the treatments are gaining increasing attention as the supplementing of ‘friendly’ bacteria seems to play an increasingly positive role in items like heart disease.

Dr. Jones’ team has recently investigated whether or not the same bacteria that lowers ‘bad cholesterol’ can have a positive effect on cutting blood levels of the molecules of cholesterol attached to fatty acids. The combination of the molecules and fatty acid are linked to risks of particular cardiovascular disease.

The researchers tracked molecules of cholesterol that were bound to saturated fat, denoting dangerous plaque that builds up and is linked to heart complications.

Jones’ research team is the first to show that probiotic formulations can cut the molecules of fat-linked cholesterol.

Dr. Jones said: “Most dietary cholesterol management products require consumption between two to 25g a day.”

British Heart Foundation’s Victoria Taylor stated: “This is a relatively small piece of research and it’s still some way off before we could recommend probiotic supplements to help people with high cholesterol.

“In the meantime, reducing levels of saturated fat as part of a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of controlling cholesterol and cutting your risk of heart disease.”

Obesity currently kills 30,000 per year in England. By 2025, more than over 40% of Brits are predicted to be overweight, which raises risks of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke or cancer.
